Stories of loss and solidarity during the AIDS epidemic

Between 1985 and 1995, the LGBTQ+ community lost a large part of its generation to the AIDS epidemic. Friends, partners, and acquaintances died, while exclusion and powerlessness colored daily life. The Shakespeare Club of COC Amsterdam brings this period to life through storytelling. Personal stories take center stage: about grief, love, and the strength to carry on.

What storytelling tells you that history cannot

HIV is nowadays a treatable, chronic condition. As a result, the awareness of what was happening back then is fading. Yet survivors still carry this collective memory with them. Through storytelling, they share what numbers and facts cannot capture: how it felt, what it meant, and how communities supported each other through buddies and organizations like COC Amsterdam.

Connecting generations in the H'ART Museum

This event focuses on connection between generations within the LGBTQ+ community. Young queer people and older survivors come together at the H'ART Museum Amsterdam.
