Shostakovich & The Ferschtman Family
The Ferschtman family moved from Russia to the Netherlands in 1978. They are closely connected to the music of Shostakovich and prefer to pass on the history. "Every time there is a Shostakovich memorial year, I feel a strong desire to devote attention to this man and his music," says Dmitri Ferschtman. "Six years before his death, I was introduced to Shostakovich as a cellist in the then Glinka Quartet. We had just graduated from the conservatory in Moscow, I was twenty-four, and we played his music for him. And we did that a number of times."
Chamber music by Shostakovich
Dmitri Ferschtman: 'In this third concert, you hear an enormous transformation in the Seven Romances set to poetry by Aleksander Blok . Some with cello, others with piano, with violin. The poems are mainly about freedom and beauty.' Liza Ferschtman: 'Shostakovich is so personal here. It is incredible how lonely that music is. Also pure and beautiful. Like a Mozart score, written down flawlessly and perfectly, in one take.'
