ICP Orchestra

The ICP Orchestra, a household name for years. In 1967, Han Bennink, together with pianist/composer Misha Mengelberg, laid the foundation for this versatile orchestra, which remains known as one of the most creative groups in modern jazz. This globally leading orchestra improvises in every direction at the Bimhuis.

Mengelberg's oeuvre
Mengelberg passed away in 2017, but his compositions are kept very much alive by the otherwise virtually constant lineup. The starting point is Mengelberg's oeuvre, yet no other ICP concert sounds the same. The musicians in the ICP Orchestra have learned to handle the peculiarities of fellow musicians' timing or intonation, how to confuse their colleagues, and how to bend or undermine the music during the performance. The music is full of surprises, unexpected twists, lithe grace, and strange outbursts. With Thomas Heberer, trumpet; Joost Buis, trombone; Michael Moore, clarinet/alto sax; Ab Baars, clarinet/tenor sax; Tobias Delius, clarinet/tenor sax; Mary Oliver, violin/viola; Harald Austbø, cello; Oscar Jan Hoogland, piano; Ernst Glerum, double bass; and Han Bennink on drums.
